Bluetooth in New Model Vehicles

The cars that are now coming equipped with Bluetooth allow you to have a Bluetooth connection between your wireless phone and your car (through the phone and car's Bluetooth connection).

If by any chance, you have a compatible phone (and are on a compatible wireless network - that is, compatible with the car), you can use the car's console to dial your phone, access your address book, make and receive calls, etc. You won't even need a Bluetooth headset in order to use the car's features, but you do, however, need a compatible phone. So, keep that in mind.

Here is an example from Audi:

Your Audi vehicle may be equipped with a phone preparation utilizing a Bluetooth interface to enable hands-free functionality (compatible mobile phones sold separately). You will need a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone in order to utilize this function. Not all Bluetooth enabled mobile phone models are compatible with Audi's phone preparation. Audi recommends the use of the Audi phone cradle (sold separately) with your mobile phone while operating this vehicle.

Here is some information on Mercedes Benz:

"Plug a sleek new system-compatible phone into your Mercedes-Benz for instant integration with the Hands-Free Communication System or use the available Bluetooth interface to enjoy the benefits of hands-free calling while keeping your phone in your pocket, your purse, or wherever it's convenient.

With the system engaged, you can keep both hands on the wheel while communicating, for easier, safer, more convenient driving.

With your phone docked in the Multi-Handset Interface cradle:

The system will access and display your phonebook/address book. Your phone's battery will charge automatically once plugged in. All calls are clearly delivered through your audio system, which leaves you in control of the volume. The audio system automatically mutes the radio or even pauses the CD during any calls that you receive will driving.

You can even control calls via your multifunction steering wheel or with the optional voice control system. To make hands-free communication even easier, initialize your approved phone with the Bluetooth interface; the system will automatically recognize your phone every time you enter the vehicle.

With Bluetooth, you are able to send text messages received via Bluetooth and you can copy any text from messages and or notes.

The good news is that it doesn't matter how you received the text message; as long as it is on your phone as an SMS message (text message), you can forward it to someone else. Yes, you can copy the text within a text message, provided you have a device that allows you to copy text (most phones these days allow you to do this). Once in the body of the text message, choose the Options, which should have an option to Copy. When you are in the Note, choose Options and then choose Paste.

Whenever you choose the Copy option, the text will go onto the Clipboard (just like with Windows) and this will allow you to Paste the text somewhere else.

Choosing A Bluetooth Headset

Choosing A Bluetooth Headset

Creating a good wireless headset for Bluetooth is actually difficult to do. The regular wired headsets are easy to design - with ranging styles.

Bluetooth headsets can never be as small or as light as wired headsets, simply because it needs to include the battery and extra functions. This extra size will impact how the headset mounts on or around your ears.

Comfort There seems to be two main styles of headsets for Bluetooth. Some are held into place with a loop around the ear. These styles are normally more comfortable, although they may be less secure. The others are held in place by being jammed into your ear - and usually prove to be less comfortable.

Factors to consider

Cost The cost is an obvious issue, something that you really need to think about.

Ergonomics

1. Check to see if the device is easy to quickly and conveniently put on your ear then take it off again.

2. Are the control buttons on the headset easy to use?

3. The headset should be comfortable to wear for long phone calls.

4. Can you use it with a pair of glasses?

5. Check to see if you can wear it with either ear.

6. When you aren't wearing it, you'll need to se how you would carry it with you.

7. The weight is important as well, as you don't want something that has the risk of falling off.

Ease of use. 1. The commands and controls should be easy to remember.

2. The volume level should be easy to adjust.

3. The unit should turn on quickly.

4. The manual should be very well written and easy for you to understand.

5. There should be a support number for you to call if you should experience any types of problems.

Features 1. You'll need to know about the battery, the talk time, type, and how to tell when it is going dead or fully charged.

2. How many devices can the unit be paired with?

3. Compatability is also important, as well as the warranty period.

4. Check the sound quality for both sending and receiving audio.

5. What type of range does the headset offer you?

Other important capabilities include voice tags, last number redial, tranfer calls, 3 way calling, link to other phones, call reject, and mute. You'll also want to note if it looks attractive, and if it's too big or too small.

Wibree vs. Bluetooth

During October 2006, several tech companies, mainly Nokia, have announced that they will be launching new wireless networking technology called Wibree. However, Wibree will not be related to current Wi-Fi technologies, due to the fact that it will not have the range and bandwidth that Wi-Fi has. Instead, Wibree capacities will be more comparable to Bluetooth, with a range of approximately 30 feet (10m) and similar bandwidth as Bluetooth (1Mbps).

The advantage of Wibree over Bluetooth is that it is a lot more power efficient, which makes it ideal for use in smaller and less costly devices than the ones currently using Bluetooth. The immediate uses once the standard is approved is to connect peripherals, like keyboards, to computers, but its lows cost may make it applicable to smaller devices such as toys, wrist watches, or sports gear.

The main features of Wibree are:

- Ultra low power consumption
- Ultra low cost
- Reduced size for human interface devices (HID)
- Global interoperability

Additionally, Wibree can be implemented in both a stand-alone chip or dual-mode chip that can include both Bluetooth and Wibree.

Companies are now submitting Wibree through a standardization process in order to obtain wider acceptance and, once completed, hopefully schedule to launch it sometime in 2007.  Alex Martin has a Masters Degree in Information Systems Management and is a consultant for several major Telecom companies worldwide. Samsung's SGH-e620 Phone with Bluetooth Voice Recognition and Other Smartphone Features

SGH-E620 is not just limited to Bluetooth and voice recognition technologies, but there are many more useful features which make it a true smartphone. The admirable SGH-E620 flip phone holds one external display with following specifications: TFT display 265K colors (96 x 96 pixels) and the internal display to give a sharp view of contents, data and pictures, holds the specification TFT, 256K colors with 176 x 220 pixels. Like other smart camera phones which hold camera with flash, this Bluetooth phone does not have any such type of camera. But that doesn't mean it is not a camera phone; this phone has a camera with a small flash which is specifically called dual flash. This type of flash actually enhances the overall performance of the battery.

It has USB, GPRS (class 10 for internet) as well as support for SyncML and Bluetooth radio technology for quick wireless transfers, and as a tri-band phone it offers great connectivity for communication across the globe. Although you can make calls using phone but its hands free calling feature makes calling more comfortable when you are on the go. For example, you can put your cell phone inside your bag or pocket and still make and receive calls comfortably. Moreover, as compared to other similar devices available in the market its voice recognition capacity is greatly enhanced and the voice recognition won't be limited to the voice type.
